Château du Morimont

Oberlarg, Alsace (F)
GPS coordinates: N 47°26.735, E 007°12.854, 800m above sea level

First mentioned in the year 1183. The castle controlled a road leading to Switzerland. It was build by the nobles of Morimont (Mösberg). Destroyed during the Thirty Years' War in 1635. In 1826, a group of Swiss patriots assembled at this place and planned the secession of the region Jura from the Swiss canton of Bern. It was only in 1978 that their dream became true and the split was made official based on a vote of the Swiss people. The new canton was named "Republic and Canton of the Jura / République et canton du Jura" and joined the Swiss Confederation as a full member.
